MUET WORKSHOP REPORT

Venue: Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro.

Date: Aug. 30 and 31, 2008.

Summary:

Rastek Technologies conducted a two-day workshop on MATLAB programming and its interfacing with AVR microcontroller at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro. The audience was third year and final year undergraduate students. The total participants were around forty-five. The workshop was divided into three interactive lecture sessions along with practical demonstration. Following are the topics that were covered in the workshop.

       PART A. INTRODUCTION TO MATLAB

  1. MATLAB product family overview.
  2. MATLAB workspace and basic commands.
  3. Defining variables, vectors and matrices.
  4. Matrix generation using commands, random matrix generation.
  5. Vectors and matrix indexing.
  6. Making programs in MATLAB using m-file.
  7. Introduction to SIMULINK.

 

        PART B.  AVR ATMEG8 MICROCONTROLLER PROGRAMMING IN C

  1. Introduction to microcontroller-based systems.
  2. AVR microcontroller in-system programming tools.
  3. Basic layout of PC-AVR interfacing.
  4. AVR ATMEGA8 architecture and pinouts.
  5. Configuration of AVR STUDIO and PonyProg software.
  6. Interface design for AVR in-system programming using PC’s parallel port.
  7. ATMEGA8 programming techniques in C using AVR STUDIO.
  8. ATMEGA8 port structure and programming in C.
  9. Practical demonstration to the participants.

 

  PART C.  SERIAL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN ATMEGA8 AND PC  (RUNNING MATLAB)  

  1. Overview of serial communication. Control and data signals.
  2. AVR USART architecture, register definition and configuration parameters.
  3. AVR USART programming.
  4. Creating serial port object in MATLAB.
  5. Complete hardware description and programming of AVR and PC (running MATLAB) to establish a null-modem serial link.
  6. Practical demonstration.
